Japan shocked! Typhoon Mindulle hits Hachijo Island, Tokyo
Large and very strong Typhoon Mindulle moved northeastward on Oct. 1, engulfing Japan's Hachijo Island in the Izu Islands south of Tokyo in a stormy area. The typhoon is expected to maintain strength and make its closest approach to the Izu Islands by early afternoon.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has called for extreme caution on the Pacific side of eastern and northeastern Japan over risks of powerful winds, heavy rains and rough seas.
In response to the typhoon's approach, the Hachijo Municipal Government has issued a town-wide evacuation order for older people, the stage 3 in a 5-level warning system.
The town has set up seven evacuation centers calling for residents who are elderly or have physical impairments to come to them. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government said evacuation centers are also open in the town of Oshima and the village of Miyake, with more than 300 people already in their care.
According to the JMA, Typhoon Mindulle is moving northeast at a speed of 35 kilometers per hour as of 10 a.m. on Oct. 1. It had a central atmospheric pressure of 945 hectopascals, with a maximum wind speed near its center of 45 meters per second (162 km/h), and maximum wind gust speeds of 60 m/s (216 km/h). The area 310 kilometers northwest and 280 kilometers southeast of the typhoon's center is in a storm zone with wind speeds of 25 m/s (90 km/h) or more.
