The 2020 Pacific Typhoon Season was exceptional in many ways. starting far later than typical and having fewer storms than normal, while at the same time having numerous powerful and memorable typhoons. The basin struggled to form any storms early in the season other than Typhoon Vongfong, becoming the first season in over 130 years to not have any tropical cyclones form in the month of July.
However, mid and late-season activity picked up, and included not only a historic triple impact to the Korean peninsula within 2 weeks with Typhoons, Bavi, Maysak, and Haishen but also one of the strongest landfalling tropical cyclones in recorded history in Super Typhoon Goni (Rolly), which slammed into Bicol in the Philippines with winds of 190mph and a pressure under 890mb. The year didn't go out quietly either as the train of late-season impacts to the Philippines and Vietnam continued, with Typhoon Vamco breaking the maximum potential intensity value in the South China Sea. While not as active as the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the 2020 Pacific Typhoon Season was memorable for many reasons, and this typhoon season animation recounts the year for us to look back at.
